Create a Powerful Lead Magnet

Creating a Lead Magnet to Build Your Email List

One of the most powerful tools to accelerate your success is a lead magnet. You may have also heard a lead magnet called an opt-in offer.

A lead magnet is a free guide, tool, etc., that visitors to your website can access in exchange for sharing their email address with you.

A lead magnet accomplishes several things:

  • First, and most importantly, a lead magnet builds you email list.
  • It also helps establish your expertise in the minds of prospective customers or clients.
  • Finally, it helps you build a relationship with those prospects. When you give them something valuable for free, they are more likely to buy from you in return.

Choose the Idea for Your Lead Magnet

Format:
A lead magnet can take lots of forms. Some of the common words you’ll see in the names of lead magnets include toolkit, cheat sheet, guide, top tips, list and training.

Scope:
A good lead magnet strikes a balance:

  • It doesn't give away all of your expertise or know-how.
  • But it does offer enough information to feel useful to your target customers or clients. They should feel that they got something of value in return for sharing their email address with you.

Another way to think about the scope of your lead magnet: It should give your prospects information they couldn't find simply by reading a magazine article on your area of expertise or by Googling the topic.

Topic:

  • The topic of your lead magnet should be one that lets you show off your expertise. The information should be unique to you, your business and what you offer.
  • Your topic should speak to the needs and desires of your target audience. It should be useful to them and spark their eventual interest in buying from you.
  • Your topic should be focused. For example, "leadership" is too vague of a topic. But "The 5 Things New Managers Must Know" is just right.
  • A good way to generate some potential topics is to think about the questions you get asked most often by  potential customers or clients. What do you find yourself telling everyone you work with? What do you feel is valuable for all your clients or customers to know? Can you put this information into a list of helpful steps or tips?
